Is motherhood worth it?

Last week I was talking to a woman I met at an event. She was a professional woman, who was currently on maternity leave. She told me she had two small children – one aged 3 and one aged six months. Without thinking I said: “I don’t envy you.” She was taken aback and said: “You’re the only woman of my mother’s generation to say anything like that. They all say it’s the best time.” I was really surprised at that. I know how difficult I had found being the mother of two small boys. The boredom. The never-ending questions. The tantrums. The dreariness of domestic chores. The conversations with other mothers who wanted to talk about the best washing powder.  And sometimes the sheer loneliness of it. Of course, there were also incredibly positive times when my love for my boys overflowed. I experienced a level of tenderness for another human being that I’d never thought possible.  I felt such pride as they learnt to walk and talk and interact. I used to say …

What influences children’s eating habits? Many parents want their children to eat more healthy food, but struggle to find an effective way to do it. Shouting, wheedling and bribing don’t work, or only work for a short period of time. We feel they are influenced by television, their friends or just engage in a power-struggle with us. But there is a solution. That solution varies depending on the age of your child. Fortunately, there are three pieces of research that can give you the insights you need to help your children enjoy healthy food. Getting young child to eat vegetables We know that vegetables are good for us, but a lot of children don’t wnat to eat vegetables. The first is research on three to five-year olds. The study is published in the Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior. In the study, Lanigan and her colleagues wanted to see if statements that t simply convey the benefits of healthy food would influence their choices.  Before beginning, the 87 children in the experiment ranked how much …

What to do when your child is being bullied at school

Bullying is distressing both for your child and for you. If you know your child is being bullied at school, you need to stay calm and work out a strategy to help them. This can feel overwhelmingly difficult, but the Indigo Essences may be able to help your child and you. Indigo Essences are made in Ireland from the energy of crystals. A rock is placed in water for a period of time, usually 24 hours. The rock is then taken out of the water and the remaining liquid is preserved with an equal quantity of brandy. Sounds bizarre? Yes, my rational mind thinks it is too, but I know that flower essences and combination essences like these can work well to help all sorts of problems. There are different combination remedies for different problems – for the child who has difficulty sleeping, or is a loner, but there are 4 combinations that are particularly suitable for bullying whether in or out of school: Champion Indigo Essence This is the first and most obvious choice …

9 signs your child might have allergies

Sadly more and more children are suffering from allergies, and there are certain signs that indicate when allergies are causing or significantly contributing to health problems. Here’s a short list of what to look out for. 1.Dark circles or bags under the eyes making the child look permanently tired. In Chinese medicine this area of the face is linked to the adrenal glands. The adrenal glands are one of the main organs of the body involved in stress reactions, and exposure to allergens certainly produces stress in the body. Sometimes there is also a crease seen under the eyelids. 2. Dry, flaky lips. Often the edge of the lip is an indistinct blur rather than there being a definite line between it and the rest of the face. Michio Kushi in his book Oriental Diagnosis says that different parts of the lip correspond to different parts of the digestive system. The upper lip represents the stomach. The lower part corresponds to the intestines. These parts of the body are often involved with allergic reactions particularly …

Addicted To TV or computer games?

A simple but rather strange self-help technique from Health Kinesiology can be used safely by anyone. It usually helps adults and children who are “addicted” to television or computer games, people who are susceptible to static electric shocks and those who develop headaches, etc. if they use computers or game consuls. It’s also a great help for people who are sensitive to electro-magnetic pollution (electro-sensitivity). It sounds bizarre, but give it a go – it really works. An electric hair drier is used to degausse [demagnetise] the body. The hair drier is switched on and then the side of the motor is run over the whole of the body. This needs to be done on average once a week, or even more frequently for anyone who is particularly sensitive electrically. The whole procedure takes less than 5 minutes. You can see a video of how to do it here. Some people are anxious about using a hair drier because they have been told that they should reduce their exposure to electrical equipment as much as …
